Schmidt Christmas Card Letter 2011

Our year has been FULL of excitement, as always!
Although, it was a different kind of excitement compared to years of old...having a (4th) baby...changes everything :)

Because we were in baby mode, yet again this year (Jackson was born in November of 2010), our lives slowed down, simplified and we stayed put way more than ever. Which was a tough adjustment in many ways.

I (Megan) began 2011 motivated to experience "The Happiness Project" - a book that inspires you to break down your goals for yourself into 1 month increments...it was a success...for 6 months :)  I simplified, organized, and became WAY more efficient with my time (out of necessity with 4 kids!).  I used E-mealz to help me at dinner time, I read books each month to help me be a better mom, wife and person, I blogged often...but as the baby got older and the kids started being home in the summer, well, I just got too tired to keep "up" with my goals I had set in January.  I must say, I'm still Happy! And I'm probably in a better place now, as we head into 2012 than I have been for those 6 months I quit my project.

I have cut way back on serving outside the home, but one thing I am committed to being a part of is Joey's school - The Oaks Academy.  I am the Co-Coordinator of Parent Reps and I love it!  I have also chose to serve at Common Ground - I coordinated our church's 10 year anniversary this past August called CG10 and served as a Sunday School teacher in the 4s room from Sept through Nov. I also have enjoyed a book study one night a week with an amazing group of women who make me feel known and loved.

Joe, God bless him, has been a huge help with the increased responsibilities of having four kids.  Joe is still active in the Circle City Sound Barbershop Chorus as well as the bass for his own quartet called Rip Chord. They are amazing!  And their wives are great too! We've enjoyed birthdays, retreats, and watching our husbands perform all year long - the Rip Chord family is a special gift to us.

Joe has been with Indiana Municipal Power Agency for 6 years and is doing very well. Ask him about Street Lights…he’s become an expert as he finished up a 5 million dollar government grant that his agency was awarded. Now that he's a PE (Professional Engineer), the next expectation of his company is for him to pursue his MBA.  Just a few weeks ago he was admitted into the Butler University MBA program!  He starts in January and will be going in the evenings and weekends for atleast the next 2 years.  It's exciting that he is a Bulldog!

He also spends a lot of time working on our home and rental properties – which seems like a never ending task!  He and my dad finished tiling our kitchen floor this May and it is beautiful!

Joey (turns 7 in April) is doing very well. He is in first grade at The Oaks Academy and loves it. This fall he played in a Y soccer league and he is also in Piano lessons every Monday afternoon - he's so talented.  He enjoyed a Music Camp at his school this summer too.  Joey lost his first tooth in September (it was like it was contagious in his class!).  School is his very favorite thing – he has great teachers, a great school and he is thriving.  He is a very strong reader and does well in math too.  We are amazed at his memory and ability to remember the littlest of details.  His new favorite books are Boxcar Children and Magic Tree House series - he LOVES the mysteries that are chapter books!

Morgan (turns 5 a few days after Christmas) is our “sweet pretty girl”. She is passionate, opinionated, and a pack rat.  Her "stuff" is always overflowing into other rooms, and in bags, bins and purses are all over the house.  She LOVED playing soccer this fall, especially because she could wear her pink sporty skirt with her cleats and shin guards! She is in 4s Preschool and we are excited for her to start back to her old school (ECC) next week. (We tried a Co-op thing for she and Jameson where I helped teach and it just didn't work out for us).  She loves painting, building, taping paper and playing pretend.  We are very excited to "surprise" her with a special treat for her 5th birthday-  you'll have to check our blog for the reveal!

Jameson (turning 3 in Feb) is our quiet spirit...well, atleast he used to be!  He is involved in First Steps (a speech therapy program) because when he turned 2 he was still quite limited on words.  Now after nearly a year of weekly therapy, (Thank you Jennifer!) he is excelling and has his voice!  Just the other day he said "I love you, mom" for the first time...what a gift!  He was in the Co-op once a week and will now be at ECC on Tuesdays with his sister and that seems to really improve his speech too - being around other 2 years olds is lots of fun for him. He is our athlete.  He is rough and tumble with bruises on his legs from falling while playing basketball, scratches on his arm from climbing a tree and sweaty hair from running non-stop.

Jackson (turned 1 on Nov. 15th) is our bundle of sunshine.  He is always smiling, laughing or trying to get you to smile by making funny noises or "singing" as loud as he can.  He is sweet, easy, laid back and along for the ride.  Not much gets to him, but if he's hungry, he'll let you know.  He is SO CLOSE to walking...which just means a whole new world for him (and us!).  He is into cupboards, crawling up stairs and loves putting things in and taking things out....even folded laundry (...sigh).  We are so thankful for this precious gift in our family.

Because life with four is alot to balance, we limited our "stuff" this year.  But we still made an effort to "Make Memories" with our family the best we could:

Over Memorial Day, after being downtown watching the parade, Joe surprised us with an overnight stay at Caribean Cove (and indoor waterpark) just on the north side of town - it was the kids' first ever hotel stay.  Exhausting, but fun!
We took our annual trip in July with the Williams side of the family (to Pennsylvania this year). Idlewild Rocked! It’s always fun to see everyone!
We went to a State Park in Bloomington with a bunch of barbershoppers and "camping" (although NOT overnight!) was a fun experience for the kids too.
Thanks to a raffle during a fundraiser for The Viewfinder Project, we won a photo shoot with a wonderful photographer (see Christmas card - you KNOW I didn't take those!)  What a gift it is to have such priceless photos of all of us!
Weekly, we have a great group of friends from Common Ground who we host for food and fellowship called our "House Church" - it brings us great joy to walk this journey with others.

Joe and I celebrated 10 years of marriage this August - we bought bedroom furniture (our first set!) and have plans to take a trip to Florida when it's not so sunny in Indiana (like Jan or Feb!).  I don't know how to explain it, but our love for each other has grown stronger and deeper these past 10 years...we're so blessed.

Mostly, we just enjoy our time with each other, especially when Daddy's home!
We love being this busy, goofy, crazy family of 6!

We hope this letter finds you well! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas and Happy 2012 to you!

Joe, Megan, Joey, Morgan, Jameson and Jackson

OH We're on our way, we're on our way, on our way to Dull's Tree Farm!

Because it was just too beautiful of a day to pass up - we went out to cut down our Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving this year...oh, and so did about a 1,000 other people too!

We have gone to Dull's Tree Farm many times (with a few trials and errors elsewhere in years past)...We loaded up Jackjack in the Ergo, got the kids in hoodies and hats and headed the hour north to the farm.  When we arrived, there was NO parking, cars, trucks, vans and people everywhere....and needless to say, few saws or carts to speak of.

After killing some time watching braver souls ride down a grass hill through some big white tube, we finally grabbed a saw and headed out for the hunt.
Morgan found the most perfect tree ever and the kids helped daddy cut it down.
We decided to pass on the hour long wait in line for the finishing touches on the tree (a shake and a mesh wrap) and took the long way home hoping the dead needles would fall out behind us as we rode.

We love our tree and the kids did a wonderful job of decorating - really, they did.  I had the genious idea (or maybe it was by accident) to put ornaments in big gallon plastic bags last year as we were taking the tree down.  Each bag had a name on it, so each child had "THEIR" ornaments to hang this year.  Who'd a thought that was all it took!
So, we enjoyed our Christmas music, sung along and hung up ornaments - it was wonderful.  Jackjack was OBVIOUSLY asleep at this point, of course!  Maybe next year he can join us.  But for now, he is a one man demolition machine when it comes to the bottem row of ornaments, garland and tinsel...but the pokey pine teaches him quickly to NOT TOUCH!  :)

We are just getting underway with the beginning of our Advent tradition of lighting our Advent wreath and coming up Thursday (December 1st), we start the Jesse Tree!

I just LOVE this time of year!

Listened to Pandora "Chirstmas" music on Joe's Iphone - Thank you IMPA!

Oh Kismass twee!  (JJ's favorite song)

Have a very Merry Christmas!

Oh and...one last mention of my Happiness Project :)

Well, my Happiness Project failed....

If you look at what I set as goals for myself at the beginning of the year, well, I didn't get them all. I consistently read books, blogged my "new ideas" and stayed on task for the first 6 months.

But I must say, part of doing this project was helping me realize what's MOST important to do (efficiency), CAPTURING memories (blogging), and CONSISTENTLY doing day-to-day things (laundry). And - I DID THAT!

I realized I didn't need to do EVERYTHING all the time and I put my family first (out of survival, sometimes). So reading each night, getting to bed by 10pm and focusing on those last 6 items...well, they just didn't happen with purpose and focus...but they happened naturally instead!

Here are the last and VERY few One Sentence Journal entries that I have written....that was one goal I didn't keep up with, but value having and hope to take back up again soon.

6/12/11 - I want to commit to re-commit to Happiness Project!

6/14/11 - Double ear infections for both baby boys - JJ steals Jacks paci then puts it back in his mouth...Jack needs nebulizer on top of that too :(

6/15/11 - Done nursing....Forever.

6/16/11 - My kids choose to have races around the yeard - 10 laps, no "pit stops"; JJ makes the cutest sound to "start your engine"

6/19/11 - FATHER'S DAY - I am so blessed to have a great dad - so selfless and generous and giving. I am so blessed to have a husband who is so amazing with our kids - so kind, so patient, so silly and so observant. I am so very thankful.

6/21/11 - SO MUCH planning! CG10 - meetings, emails, phone calles - it's all a balance!

7/27/11 - Have our new bedroom furniture! But dresser nearly landed on JJ when he tried to climb it in search of paci tonight

7/31/11 - JackJack slept from midnight to 7am...too bad Joey and Mo stopped in at 3am and 4am - Will I ever sleep through the night again? :)

8/4/11 - 10 years of marriage - I am so loved and so very blessed

8/28/11 - I have had a very difficult time falling asleep this month. My mind races, can't settle in...find myself exhausted, but stuck awake waiting...for baby to cry...for 1 of the kids to come in...because it ALWAYS does...just exhausted.

9/7/11 - I am excited to be leading Godly Play in church (Tabernacle/Temple Sunday!)

9/27/11 - Joey lost his 2nd tooth today at the Children's Museum!

11/27/11 - JJ said "I love you, Mom" for the first time today - I'm still glowing :)

11/30/11 - I'm sick. I'm exhausted. Ugh.

Happy Birthday Jackson!!

Jackson had a great first birthday!
We celebrated with all our friends from House Church and all our family.
We had quite a gathering and Oh! how times have changed and kids have been added to surround the table for singing Happy Birthday - it was a packed house!

Our sweet boy is nearly 25 lbs and 31.5 inches tall.
He's in the 90th percentile for height and weight.
He is talking - mama, dada, bubba, hello, hi, bye, uh oh
He is so close to walking - even taking a few steps here and there, but lowers himself down gracefully rather than making a scene by falling :)

He is the happiest, smiliest, laughingest, little boy ever - we just love our JackJack!

Fall Fun

Just wanted to upload some photos I took during a beautiful fall day earlier this month:

Bubba's Visit - his birthday and Veterans Day Chapel

Bubba came to visit - partially to help babysit, and mostly to spend time with the grandkids.
While he was here, we got to celebrate his birthday with him.  Per his request, we had Cream Chicken on Biscuits for dinner.  He got to eat it on the Schmidt Special Day plate :)   We had cake and ice cream for dessert too!

Then on Wednesday, the Oaks Academy did a special Veterans Day Chapel. I was so proud that my dad was willing to be acknowledged for his service to our country. Mr. Hart, our headmaster, introduced ande thanked my dad, as well as nearly 40 other men and women veterans who are associated with our school. It was a proud moment for me, but it was even more awesome for Joey - because the final statement after reading my dad's name, rank, and years served was "Grandfather to Joey Schmidt". What a special day for both of them!

Jackson is 11 months old!

In the 11th month of our fourth child...I ALMOST failed my chair photo duties....
Actually, I can't believe it took this long :)
Luckily, I captured his 11 month photo STILL in the month of October (it's last day)...although it should have happened on the 15th!  Oh well, just thankful we got it and it's a good one.

This is the happiest, most easy going, fun loving, laughing all the time child on earth - so thankful for our Jack Jack!

11 months old

And yet, we still went trick or treating!

After the cut finger earlier that afternoon, we were unsure what Halloween evening would bring - no worries - there was candy to be had!

Bammy sewed Peter Pan his super special hat!

Sorting all candy together...all almond joys go to mommy...

Jack Jack's FIRST Halloween!

JJ our Halloween Mess

Jameson gave us quite a "Scare" on Halloween this year.
I was upstairs and as always, JJ, wanted to go get a snack by himself.  I keep apples, bananas, plums and nectarines in the bottom drawer of our frig so our kids can have a healthy snack anytime they want.  Unfortunately, JJ's just a little too independent....

I hear him screaming downstairs.
I come upon my son, standing at the open frig with a knife in his hand and a banana in the other.  Let's just say, he missed the stem. (something he has seen me slit anytime I get him a banana to ease the peeling - which he insists upon doing himself too).
Blood was everywhere, because out of pain and fear, he began to shake his hand to ease the pain....oh the sight.
Thankfully, after over an hour of being on the phone with Joe, Bammy, the pediatrician's office and then later, Dr. Jim....things calmed down a bit.
No need for stitches - just a tight butterfly bandaid and some Neosporin.

As you can see from the photo, the night before, he had also clocked his eye with the corner of his sister's dresser....

Appropriately being Halloween, that was enough blood for me in a 24 hour period!

Oh JJ...we love you :)

Joey's Life Timeline for Oaks 1st grade

Joey got to create a timeline for a first grade class project.
He did a wonderful job illustrating his experiences!
It is hanging on the wall outside his classroom with all the other first graders
- it's a sight to see!
